Flashlight 3D is hiring its second intern cohort.
Full-time, 30–40 hours a week, in person in downtown San Diego. You'll build digital health tool prototypes alongside the founder, ship a real product, and get hands-on experience with how a technology company gets off the ground.
This cohort is designed for college students. Career-switchers are welcome.
Why it's worth your time
The most in-demand jobs right now require a continuously improving set of tools. The best way to learn them is to build with them.
You'll work with LLMs, agentic systems, and real health data to design and ship digital health tools — on a real timeline, for a real startup. You'll leave with portfolio-ready work, connections in health tech and AI, and applied experience that complements your academic training.
Roles
We're hiring across nine areas. Most interns contribute across multiple roles — this is a startup, not a specialized job.
Medical Records
Build the pipeline that ingests, parses, and organizes medical records from disparate sources — Epic exports, PDF discharge summaries, lab reports, imaging notes — into a clean, consolidated structure. From there, generate LLM context files that make a patient's complete history queryable and useful for downstream clinical analysis.
Sub-roles: Records Ingestion & Parsing · Data Normalization · LLM Context Generation
Genomic Data & WGS
Build the variant analysis pipeline — from raw VCF files through annotation and filtering to clinically relevant findings. Implement polygenic risk scoring models that translate genomic data into actionable risk estimates across disease categories.
Sub-roles: Variant Analysis · Polygenic Risk Scoring · Genomic Annotation
Wearable & Continuous Data
Build integrations that pull continuous data streams — heart rate, sleep, activity, glucose — from consumer devices and health APIs into a structured store. Design the processing layer that cleans, aligns, and summarizes time-series signals into formats useful for clinical context and model input.
Sub-roles: Device Integration · Signal Processing · Continuous Data Pipelines
Model Architecture
Build the AI layer — model selection, prompting strategy, and agentic workflows that chain models into tools that solve real clinical problems. You'll also own evaluation and safety, defining how we measure whether the system is working and where it's likely to fail.
Sub-roles: Model Selection & Best Practices · LLM Architecture & System Prompts · Agentic Workflows · Evaluation & Safety
Application Development
Design and ship the full-stack product — front-end, back-end, and UX — that makes the underlying intelligence accessible to patients and providers. You'll work across the stack, from API design and data access to the interface a user actually touches.
Sub-roles: UX · UI Design · Front-end Development · Back-end Development
Operations
Keep the team coordinated and the work moving — sprint planning, task management, and the rhythms that make a small team function well. You'll also own the tools and systems the company runs on, from productivity software to internal workflows.
Sub-roles: Project Management · HR, Team-Building & Experiences · IT: Third-Party Tools, Workflows & Change Management
Marketing & Outreach
Shape how Flashlight shows up in the world — website, content, brand presence, and external communication. Build the relationships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and potential partners that help us grow and get our tools in front of the people who need them.
Sub-roles: Website, Media & Branding · Communication & Content · Partnerships & Outreach
Organization, Legal & Finance
Work on legal entity structure, corporate governance, and financial planning — the infrastructure that lets a company function and scale. Relevant for students with backgrounds in law, business, finance, or policy who want to see how these disciplines apply at a company's earliest stage.
Sub-roles: Legal Entities & Governance · Funding & Budgeting
Art & Design
Own the visual language of our products — brand system, UI, motion, and illustration. Design interfaces and visuals that communicate clinical information clearly, making complex health data feel navigable and human.
Sub-roles: Visual Identity & Branding · UI & Interaction Design · Motion & Animation · Illustration & Digital Art
What you'll do

- Design and launch a website to share them
- Apply for funding to build at least one prototype further
- Get hands-on experience in every part of starting a technology company: legal and governance, project management, product development, HR, outreach and partnerships, fundraising
